Spanish Cleaning Rods
Another item that is often found replaced on Spanish Civil War Mosin Nagants is the cleaning rod. The cleaning rod is a fairly easy piece to lose over the course of a Mosin Nagant’s history, and as a result the Spanish needed to have their own replacement cleaning rods for when this happened. Many of the various types of Spanish Mosin Nagant cleaning rods are fairly easy to identify due to their distinctive looks.
One of the more common Spanish cleaning rods has a look unlike types from other nations. The head of this type of cleaning rod is extremely thin, which is quite different from the typical short and round heads found on Soviet cleaning rods. The length of the head can vary, with some being fairly short and others having a slightly more elongated length to them. Like the Soviet style rod, the Spanish replacement rod also has a hole in the middle of the elongated head. This type of rod seems to be the more commonly encountered type of Spanish replacement cleaning rod.
Another type of Spanish replacement cleaning rod has a much more elongated head compared to the first type. The head on this type is also much thicker than the first type. Typical of these elongated rods, there is a wide cut in the head most likely put there to allow for the user to insert a cleaning patch in the head. These types of rods can have a few different variations to the look of the head, but all will have the same underlying look to them. This type of rod, while not exactly the same, does have a look that more closely resembles the cleaning rod of a Model 1893 Spanish Mauser rather than the typical Mosin Nagant design.
